Course content
Social State - the basic definition, objectives and causes of its formation. Social State and social policy - a citizen, market and the role of the public sector. Social justice and social citizenship as a way of the welfare state. Basic principles of the welfare state - the principle of solidarity, social consensus, social justice, subsidiarity and participation. Development periods of the welfare state. Social State as a reflection of social ethics - liberalism and socialism. Social State as a reflection of social ethics - communism and Church's social science The basic activities of the welfare state. Basic models of the welfare state - the continental model and Scandinavian model Basic models of the welfare state - the residual model and rudimentary model Problems of the welfare state and their causes - demographic changes and economic globalisation. Attempts to European welfare state and European social policy.

Learning outcomes
The course is to provide an overview of the theories of welfare state, its basic historical genesis of this notion, explaining the basic principles of its operation, including the current problems in the functioning of European and global context.
Students will be able to understand, in particular, the current discussions on the reform of the welfare state in the context of social sciences and theoretical anchor positions of different views on the functioning of the welfare state.
