Course content
1.Introduction to linguistic anthropology - definition, history, significance of language study 2.Beginnings of language, variation and changes of language 3.Structure of language - levels of language description 4.Semantics, semiotics, linguistic relativity 5.Speech communities, variations 6.How we use the language? From pragmatics to sociolinguistics to ethnography of communication 7.Language socialization 8.Languages in contact, identity 9.Diversity, language death and revitalization, role of anthropologists 10.Language ideology, inequality and power, gender 11.Discourse, racism, institutions 12.Nonverbal communication, written language and new contexts of language use 13.Methods of research

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to present language as an important dimension of anthropological research and as a phenomenon that influences all our interactions and perceptions of the world. Students will get acquainted with basic terminology of linguistic anthropology, with core theories and literature. The course covers topics ranging from the structure, origins of language and variability, to context-based uses of language. Understanding of function of language in connection to power, creation of identites and discourses is stressed. During the course, students will be introduced into the work with language material.
The students will be able to understand the core concepts of linguistic anthropology and do basic analysis of language and language interactions.
