Course content
|
The period of the migration of nations. The beginnings of the Slavs. The Great Moravia. Central Europe in 10th century. New and Late "Hradištní" period The development of medieval society in the 13th century - its characteristics, its creation of towns and their development, and samples of its material culture. Life in towns; the material culture of the 14th and 15th centuries. The medieval village - its characteristics, e.g. types of villages, dwellings, village crafts, plough land, material culture, etc. Medieval fortified habitats - castles, strongholds (characteristics, fundamental types, material culture). Communes of oblate houses (monasteries and their importance for the settlement in the area; status in the town community; material culture). Industrial archaeology, experiment in archaeology, aerial archaeology. Demonstration of various methods and techniques that are used in current archaeology. Note 1. The text that follows The Old and Middle Stone Age in brackets for ZS (winter term) is also relevant for other ZS and LS (summer term) entries. Note 2. Depending on the time available, an excursion to a museum or an archaeological survey will take place at the end of LS (summer term).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to inform students about the basic concepts of archaeology, the organizational structure of the specialization in the Czech Republic, the valid legislative norms, and the ones being prepared, etc. Furthermore, the primeval and historical periods are outlined from the point of view of material culture, focusing on the development in the Czech Republic as well as in Central Europe.
Students will understand the basic archaeological terminology, organisation structure of archaeology in the Czech Republic and legislative norms. They will get an outline of material culture in primeval and historical periods in the territory of present Czech Republic within the Central European context.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation
Credit will be assessed through sufficient participation in lectures (50 minimum); reading at least two publications on archaeology. At the examination, the student will be expected to provide the brief characteristics of the publications, to understand the most important conclusions, etc. Knowledge of materials presented in the lectures will be verified by an oral examination.
