Learning outcomes
The course "Digital Heritage" (Digital Approaches to Cultural Heritage) provides a comprehensive insight into the methods, tools, and conceptual frameworks employed by the digital humanities in the research, documentation, interpretation, and presentation of cultural heritage. It is grounded in an interdisciplinary integration of history, archaeology, museology, and information technologies. Students will develop an understanding of the principles underlying digital methodologies and gain an overview of their application in both academic research and public-facing practice. The course combines the theoretical framework of heritage studies, ethics, and cultural heritage management with applied digital approaches, including 3D digital documentation, computer modeling, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and artificial intelligence (AI). Emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills, critical engagement with digital data, the ability to create multimedia narratives, and the interpretation of the past through contemporary technologies. The final course output consists of the design of a digital projectsuch as an interactive exhibition, virtual presentation, digital catalogue, or educational applicationthat integrates scholarly content, narrative structure, and visual form.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student demonstrates the following: Knowledge - demonstrates knowledge of the historical development of the concept of cultural heritage and its digital transformation; - understands the basic theoretical principles of digital humanities in relation to heritage research, documentation, and presentation; - is familiar with key digital tools and technologies used in 3D documentation, modelling, VR/AR environments, and AI applications in heritage contexts; - understands fundamental ethical and methodological issues related to digital heritage practices. Skills - is able to apply selected digital tools for documentation, modelling, and presentation of cultural heritage; - can design a concept for a digital heritage project (e.g., virtual exhibition, digital catalogue, educational application); - is capable of combining scholarly content with basic narrative and visual communication principles; - is able to critically reflect on the use of digital technologies in heritage and museum practice. Competences - demonstrates the ability to work independently on a defined digital heritage task; - communicates historical and cultural content to different audiences using digital media; - shows awareness of the social and educational impact of digital transformation in cultural heritage; - is prepared for further specialised study in digital heritage, museology, or related fields.
