Course content
The Renaissance - time definition, style characteristics, humanism. The Renaissance art in Italy - architecture, sculpture, painting. The Renaissance art beyond the Alps. The Renaissance in Bohemia and Moravia. Mannerism - art in the court of Emperor Rudolf II. Baroque - time definition, style characteristics, main European centers. Baroque art in southern and western Europe. Baroque art in Bohemia and Moravia. Classicism and Empire - time definition, style characteristics, examples. Romanticism in European plastic arts and painting. Czech art in the 19th century - architecture, sculpture, painting. Art Nouveau in Europe and the Czech countries. Czech modernism in the plastic arts and painting of the 20th century - painting, sculpture. Czech art between the World Wars.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce the basic outline of style development in Czech and European art in the period from Humanism and the Renaissance until the entry of modern art in the first part of the 20th century. The subject-matter explanation stresses the role of leading artists and focuses on the ideological and socio-cultural background of the origin and the specific works of individual artistic movements.
Students will obtain a basic orientation in the problems of art history in the Early Modern period and will become familiar with the stylistic attributes of individual styles. During individual lessons, the students will encounter art works and authors that are attributable to individual style periods.

Credit is determined by submitting a paper on an assigned topic (at least eight pages of standard typescript, with academic apparatus. This paper is a prerequisite to taking the oral exam); passing a picture-recognition test (75 is required to pass); and an interview where the student will demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter (every student will bring a list of literature with a minimum of five titles).
