The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of ancient, Christian, and secular iconography and an understanding of its development and application in art history and visual culture. The method of iconological interpretation is demonstrated in lectures using selected examples from the art of all periods (from antiquity to the 21st century), taking into account various interpretative and philosophical-hermeneutic models of interpreting works of art. In the seminar part of the course, students will try their hand at interpreting selected works of art and their details, taking into account the broader cultural and historical context and the unique vernacular traditions of the development of visual culture in the Czech lands.
Graduates of the course will acquire a basic knowledge of ancient, Christian, and secular iconography, as well as an understanding of its development and practical application in art history and visual culture. In the seminar portion of the course, students will gain an understanding of and practical experience in interpreting selected works of art and collections, taking into account the broader cultural and historical context, as well as the unique traditions of visual culture development in the Czech lands.
