Course content
The third republic - fighting for the existence of democracy (the case of displacement). February 1948 (Beneš's case). Political trials of the 1950s and anti-communist resistance. The key year of 1956. The "Golden" 1960s and their cultural dimension. 1968 - new occupation. Charter 77, Church resistance, and so-called normalization. November 1989 - the Velvet Revolution. Country division - the beginning of the independent Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to analyze the key events in the development of Czechoslovakia and in the independent Czech Republic from 1945 till the present. The main focus is on the analysis of cultural development during this period.
Based on the knowledge acquired throughout the course, it will be easier for students to understand, to analyze, and to join in discussions about Czech problems connected to modern culture.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

This course ends with an oral examination (with the precondition of having completed CSCD 1). There are 30 topics (which provides better orientation for the student); the student draws two of these at the examination.
