Course content
Characteristics of the ego-documents and their typology. Their preservation, the edition. The ego-documents as a source for the historians - the difficulties of their reviewing and interpretation. Characteristics of the correspondence; the correspondence as a source. The development of the correspondence; the "golden age" of the correspondence. The precondition and the motivation for writing letters, their form - the language, styl. Specifics of letters in connection to social status - the letter as a carrier of the message and as a field for cultivation of correspondence art. Literary and nonliterary writing. The diaries - the precondition and the motivation for their writing. The memoires, 19th century - the century of memoires and diaries. The reader-writer-text relationship - the self-censorship and self-reflection. The historian or other nowadays reader and the ego-documents. Ego-documents as a protoliterary text and the "deformation" of the reality. The diary as a source - criticism of a source, possibilities of its use. Ego-documents as a primary literary expression and as a distortion of reality.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to understand to what extent materials of a personal character - such as memoirs, diaries, and personal correspondence - mirror the inner world of people and their relations. These are often the first step to literary - and that means artistic - self-expression.
The students will also encounter contemporary scholastic trends in this field, ways of approaching personal materials, and methods of their criticism and interpretation.

Credit is dependent upon active participation in seminars; an oral presentation; and a book review of one specialized foreign-language publication.
