Course content
Epigraphy. Definition of the field. The issue of the discipline. The elements of use. The history and development of the field. The origin of an inscription. Ancient inscriptions (Greek, Latin, and others); Middle Age inscriptions (Latin, Czech, German); modern inscriptions (Latin, Czech, German). The typology of inscriptions. Authorship. Authentic and false texts. Dubious cases. Letters; their relation to paleography. Its relation to chronology. Its relation to genealogy. Its relation to heraldry and sfragistics. The development of Czech epigraphy and the problems of individual periods. Bibliography of the field.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basics of epigraphy and codicology, two disciplines that assist the historical sciences in a range that is necessary for archival administration workers.
Students will get knowledge necessary for reading and interpretation of epigraphical and codicological sources.

Credit is dependent upon displaying an understanding of the field in the range of assigned study literature; participating in tuition (for more than three absences without an excuse, an extra project will be assigned); submitting a seminar paper according to the requirements of the lecturer.
