Course content
|
Definition of historical demography. Basic outline of the history of the field; its relation to demography and historiography. Main research centers, periodicals, sources (with special regard to the Early Modern Age), and means of statistic work with demographic data and the criticism of its reliability. Questions connected to the studies of the number of inhabitants. Structure of inhabitants according to their sex, age, social status, economical activity, occupation and employment, education, ethnic classification, issues of family, and household. The issue of the natural movement of inhabitants - marriage rate, fertility and birth rate, death rate, and the natural growth figure. Geographic mobility, social processes, the concentration of inhabitants.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the basic problems and the methodical approaches of historical demography. The sources, basic terminology and practical skills necessary for working with historical demographic materials are the prime concern.
Students will be able to work with the sources, they will master basic terminology and abilities that will help them to analyse topics in the field of historical demography.

Oral examination
Credit will be determined by the student's knowledge of the subject matter covered in lectures, as well as the material covered in 3 technical papers (2x Historická demografie, 1x Český časopis historický).
