Course content
|
Heraldry. Definition of the field. Subject matter of this science. The relation to other fields of accessory sciences. The history of heraldry; Czech heraldry in the course of history. The current state. The function of a blazon. Its parts. Colors and metals. Blazons and heraldic figures. The development of national coats of arms from the Middle Ages till today. Bibliography of the field.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the history, methods, sources, and current state of research of two historical accessory sciences - heraldry and genealogy. Besides basic terminology, the students will learn about rules of blazoning and the development of blazons, with a focus on their developments in Czech countries. They will also learn about the practical uses of genealogical rules.
Students will be able to apply heraldic rules when blazoning, will distinguish individual types of genealogical categories, and will know the sources and main literature of both fields.
