Course content
Historical geography as an interdisciplinary subject field and auxiliary historical science; methods and development of the discipline; approaches to studying the landscape in the past and related branches (e.g. environmental history) Historic-geographical sources; historical cartography Physiography of the Czech Rep. in the past Social geography of the Czech Rep. in the past - hist. demography, historical settlement and migrations History of settlemet and history of urbanism in the Czech Republic and in Europe Frontier and administrative boundaries development of the Czech Republic Transport and communications Landscape memory; genius loci; ladscape as an inspiration

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to learn students to perceive spatial aspect of past events and to cope with it. The sudents should become able to understand present landscape as a result of its changes taken in the past, get insight into this development (history of settlement, history of urbanism) and familiarize with the sources for studying the landscape in the past (first of all with old maps and iconographical sources). The objective of the practical section of the subject is to strenghten hitherto students´ knowledge in geography of the Czech republic and Europe and extend it with the historical aspect especially within the Czech Lands and Central Europe (frontiers and administrative boundaries development, Czech names of foreign towns, rivers etc., German and Latin names of Bohemian, Moravian and Silesian place names).
Students will get knowledge in historical topography and geopolitics of the Czech Republic as well as of Europe, which is an essential part of historian´s education. They become familiar with several types of historical sources (old maps, town views) and learn to handle with them in less traditional ways (combination of a text and visual materials): e.g. a poster. Historical geography as an interdisciplinary branch helps to comprehend past events and actions in spatial context.
