Course content
The origin, development, and theory of mass media. Journalistic genres. Sources of journalistic information. The current structure of media in the Czech Republic. The history of Czech and world journalism. Journalistic work in the press, radio and television. Media and civil society. Globalization of media. Information technologies. Regulations and ethics in media. Freedom of manifestation and freedom of media. Public opinion. Media and influence.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Methods of individual activities, Projection, Stimulating activities (simulation, games, drama)
Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide information about the consequences for democratic institutions and for citizens of a headlong development of an information society. Students will gain a basic orientation in the field of new information technologies and will better understand the principles of media actions. Students will be enabled to evaluate critically the infiltration of new pieces of information from the development of mass media, psychology, sociology, and politics, as well as research in public opinion and in electoral behavior, and how media finally influences society.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation, Creative work analysis

For the examination, students will bring an essay, a commentary, or a study of one of the topics covered in the lectures (five normal text pages are the minimum) - this must not be a copy of a published texts but a work of their own authorship. The oral examination will consist of the paper defense and additional questions about the materials discussed in lectures.
