Course content
The particular lessons will deal with the typography works of Mikuláš Aleš, Max Švabinský, Karel Hlaváček, V. H. Brunner, Adolf Kašpar, Josef Váchal, Josef Čapek, Josef Šíma, Karel Teige and other important artists.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce selected chapters of the history of a book illustration from the 16th to the 20th Centuries. The course will focus on works of the most important illustrators, artists and typographers of the Modern era of the Czech book culture. It will pay a special attention to the situation of the book decoration on the turn of the 19th snd 20th Centuries: to modern styles of symbolism, Jugendstil, cubism and works of the Czech avant-garde of the period between the wars (the Devětsil group).
The aim of the course is to provide the student with a basic orientation within the chapters of history of the book illustration from the 16th to the 20th Centuries. Most important artists, illustrators and typographers of modern Czech book culture will be introduced. A special attention will be paid to the situation of the book illustration on the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries: to the symbolism, Art noveau, cubism and to Czech interwar avant-garde (the group of Devětsil).

Students will receive credit on account of final oral interview during which they should prove knowledge of the subject matter and reading of recommended literature. Credit will be granted after writing and delivering semestral paper on the submited topic (essay to the extent of 6-8 standardized pages).
