Course content
1. Introduction 2. The Revolutions of 1789-1848 3. Napoleon I and Europe 4. German Nationalism 5. The Rhine Crisis (1840) 6. The Eastern Question 7. Europe and Overseas 8. The Italian Question 9. Bohemia in the Habsburg Monarchy 10. Belle époque and Word War I

Learning outcomes
This seminar wants to provide the students with the artistic context for the period going from the late 18th century to the First World War and explain the impact of political, social and economic processes in Europe as well as in other parts of the World on the evolution of the fine arts and, simultaneously, how the artists interpreted these processes in their artworks.
The ability to understand the relationship between the history of society and the history of art in modern times; the ability to interpret history through works of art.
Prerequisites
Ability to understand a lecture in English.
