Course content
1) Archaeology as a scientific discipline, its importance for exploring the past. Related disciplines and methods. 2) Changes in archaeological approaches over time, examples of sites with different issues and dates that we will more detail 3) Settlement/building/village - Neolithic to early Middle Ages: what has in common the most typical mansion in which people lived for most past. How do we examine it? Where it occurs? 4) Skeleton burial sites - research possibilities, period of occurrence, examples. Anthropological approaches to the past populations. 5) Fortified settlements - oppida and fortifications: what makes them special, when one began to feel the need to fortify, what does this prove? 6) Castles and fortresses: their importance for the Middle Ages of modern times. Wars and battlefields. 7) City - how to explore it, from when can we talk about this type of settlement 8) Paleolithic and Mezolite: How to explore hunter-gatherers in our country. Dust profiles under Pálava versus North Bohemian sandstone rock shelters 9) Neolithic settlements: Bylany and Těšetice key prehistoric sites in the Czech Republic 10) Craft workshops: are we able to see them archaeologically and what will they tell us? 11) Monasteries and churches: how archaeology examines them and what can be beneficial for other disciplines that move in this space. 12) Prague Castle: what can be explored at a site that archaeologists have been working on for more than 100 years?

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the method of archaeological work and to show cross-cutting topics archaeology deals. Students will have the opportunity to look at the full range of archaeological issues from the Paleolithic-Hunting-Gatherer Society to the beginning of Modern times. During lecture students will be introduced to selected areas of problems related to the protection, research and presentation of archaeological monuments. After completing this course, the student should have a basic idea of current trends in the field of archaeological heritage management.
Overview of the archaeological issues. Orientation in the most actual topics of current archaeological heritage management.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment

Reasonable participation in lectures (minimum 80%), written test from discussed topics. Seminar thesis (in the range of cca 8 normostran / 2000 words) on the selected topic (possibility of choosing from the offered topics or by agreement of your own). According to the results of the test and the quality of the report, the student will be invited for an oral examination.
