Course content
Sphragistics as an accessory historical science; the subject of study and methods; sources of sphragistics. Orientation in basic literature. Exterior signs of seals: seal material, shape, and size; seal picture; copy (legend); the method of seal fixation. Kinds of seals and the right of sealing. The sealing process. The development of seals in antiquity. The development of European seals in the Middle Ages: seals of the German kings and emperors; sovereigns' seals; the Papal seal; seals of ecclesiastical dignitaries and institutions; seals of nobles, towns, municipalities, and universities. The development of the seal in the Czech countries: seals of Czech sovereigns, bishop's seals, ecclesiastical personalities and institutions. Nobles' seals, seals of towns and municipalities, universities. Care for sphragistic materials, collections, lists of seals, and the current state of research.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the history, methods, and sources of sphragistics as an accessory historical science, as well as to the current state of research. They will learn basic terminology, kinds and descriptions of seals, how these seals were made and used, as well as the development of individual seal kinds, with a stress on the environment in the Czech countries.
Students will be able to describe seals correctly, to distinguish their basic kinds, and to orient themselves in information sources and the main literature in the field.

Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation

Credit is dependent on a seminar paper on an assigned topic (at least five pages of manuscript, not including appendixes; 30 lines per page), focusing on the practical introduction of a specific group of seals (description and simple analysis) or on working-out a compiled sub-issue of Czech (European) sphragistics.
