Course content
Contemporary history as a part of modern historiography. Sources and research institutions. Political ideologies. Totalitarian regimes and ideologies (fascism, nazism, communism). Cold War and its Historiography. War and Nationalism in 20th century. Genocides, ethnic cleansing, and international law in the 20th century. Terrorism and the world of the 20th and 21st centuries. Migration and globalization. Demographic trends on the beginning of the 21st century. The Impact of the Second World War on the Czechoslovakia. Beneš Decrees, Retribution, Expulsion of Germans. The Third Resistance in Czechoslovakia and its current assessment. Internal Structure of StB (State Secret Security).

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic problems and specific informations sources of the field . The emphasis is puted on the orientation in main problems of the contemporary history, both theoterical (the definition of contemporary history, political ideologies, theory of democracy, theory of totalitarianism and authoritarism), and practical (different faces of the political violence in the 20th century, decolonization and its results, terrorism as a security threat for contemporary world).
Student will be able to analyse the events, orientate in the quantity of different informations, to gain more objective view and participate skilfully in the discussions about concrete questions of contemporary history.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Presentation

Credit is determined by an oral examination - for better orientation, students will have a list of ten topics from which they will draw one to discuss. The seminars are obligatory. In the case of more than 3 unexcused absences, student is not allowed to the exam. Students fulfil assignments assigned by teacher in the seminars. The final evaluation depends on the result of the oral examinaiton (50%) and the work in seminars (50%).
