Course content
Unit 1) Monuments and works of art in Antiquity and the Middle Ages: Strategies for their preservation, protection and restoration Unit 2) Ancient monuments and their preservation and restoration in the Renaissance. Fragmentary sculpture, restoration practice and its contemporary theoretical reflection (Giorgio Vasari, Raffaelle Borghini, Gian Paolo Lomazzo). Unit 3) Restoration of paintings and sculptures in the 17th century (Carlo Maratta, Orfeo Bosselli etc.). Different approaches to the preservation of architecture. Unit 4) Theory of restoration and restoration praxis in the age of Enlightenment (Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the first museums and organization of restoration process) Unit 5) The 19th century: beginnings of conservation approaches in the restoration Unit 6) The 20th century: restoration as a scientific discipline and its institutionalization Unit 7) The development of restoration in the Czech lands and its specifics
