Course content
Sudden conditions in neurology - CVA, epileptic seizure, status epileptics, aetiology, diagnostics, clinical presentation, monitoring of vital functions, and prevention of the development of complications. Sudden conditions in cardiology - acute myocardial infarction, hypertension crisis, syncope, lung embolism - aetiology, diagnostics, clinical presentation, monitoring of vital functions, and prevention of the development of complications. Sudden conditions in internal medicine - acute diabetic conditions, intoxication, liver failure, renal failure, septic conditions, status asthmaticus - aetiology, diagnostics, clinical presentation, monitoring of vital functions, and prevention of the development of complications. Highly specialized nursing care of patients with selected acute conditions in neurology, monitoring, nursing physical assessment, risk prevention, nursing plan, and education. Highly specialized nursing care of patients with selected acute conditions in cardiology, monitoring, nursing physical assessment, risk prevention, nursing plan, and education. Highly specialized nursing care of patients with selected acute conditions in internal medicine, monitoring, nursing physical assessment, risk prevention, nursing plan, and education.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the specifics of work in factual intensive care units while the individual specifics of these settings are based not only on differences in basic illnesses but also on the patients' age. A specific emphasis is placed upon effectiveness and economical usage of a wide range of specialized healthcare material.
Students know the most common acute conditions in internal medicine and the used diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including innovations. They are aware of the risks faced by the patient. They are able to apply the acquired knowledge in the nursing process and education of patients and their families.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Didactic test

Completion of compulsory 50% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test.
