Course content
Winter semester: Fundamental terminology in anaesthesiology and resuscitation, and general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia, preoperative preparation, and monitoring in anaesthesia. Pain treatment. Fundamentals of cardio-pulmonary-cerebral resuscitation in the field and in the hospital. Intensive care, definition of specialty intensive care and intensive care shared between specialties, monitoring in intensive care. Respiratory pathways, securing, care of respiratory pathways, humidity, oxygenotherapy, artificial lung ventilation, ventilators. Admission of the patient and the injured in a serious condition - emergency. Summer semester: Bleeding, fundamentals of infusion therapy. Shock. Parenteral and enteral nutrition. Intoxication, nosocomial infection. Care of failing organs. Brain death, the transplantation program.

Learning outcomes
The aim is to acquire knowledge and skills in the area of intensive care and anaesthesia.
The student will gain basic dexterity for conducting first aid that is safe and of good quality. Students will know individual steps of an urgent admission including securement of respiratory pathways. Furthermore, they will know fundamentals of treatment of severe bleeding and fundamentals of anaesthesiology and of urgent resuscitation. In the area of intensive care, students will acquire knowledge of issues relevant in artificial lung ventilation, special characteristics of infusion therapy, parenteral and enteral nutrition, and care of failing organs.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Completion of compulsory 50% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of an oral examination.
