Course content
Division of surgery, special features of nursing care in individual surgical subspecialties, surgical nursing documentation, case history, and clinical examination. Nosocomial infections and defence against them, the nursing process as a defence against nosocomial infection, and antibiotic treatment regimens in surgical departments. Oral and parenteral nutrition, surgical dietetics, and enteral nutrition. The nursing process before individual types of surgeries, and the procedure in the operating theatre. Principles of post-operative monitoring, post-operative care, and post-operative complications and their management. Care of the urgently ill or injured patient, polytrauma, and organization of care of injured patients and patients with polytrauma. Laparoscopic surgery, advantages, possibilities, principles, video shoots, and care of patients after laparoscopic procedures. Special features of post-operative nursing care after various types of surgical procedures. The nursing process for patients with the diagnosis of polytrauma. The nursing process for patients with burns. The nursing process for patients after a neurosurgical operation. Traumatology and orthopaedics (basic principles and selected operations).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to become familiar with diagnostics, treatments, and nursing aspects of selected surgical illnesses and injuries.
The student knows and is able to practically apply basic knowledge of the following surgical subspecialties: head and neck surgery, neurosurgery, endocrinosurgery, chest surgery, abdominal surgery, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, urology, traumatology, child surgery, and plastic surgery.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation, Didactic test

Completion of compulsory 85% attendance at the lectures, practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written examination. Successful completion of an oral examination.
