Course content
Anatomy of the eye and its adnexa. Psychophysiology of vision. Illnesses of eyelids and conjunctiva. Illnesses of the tear apparatus. Illnesses of the cornea and sclera. Illnesses of the uvea and the retina. Illnesses of the lens and the vitreous humour. Glaucoma. Illnesses of the orbit. Neuro-ophthalmology. Tumours of the eye and of eye adnexa. Refraction and correction of refractory defects. Strabismus. The eye and global illnesses. Eye injuries. Lasers in ophthalmology. Ophthalmosurgery. Care of the visually handicapped. Principles of nursing care of patients after a plastic surgery on the orbital area, on eyelids, and after external and intraocular surgeries. Nursing documentation and nursing diagnoses in ophthalmology.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to master nursing care in ophthalmology in an ambulatory and inpatient setting and in an operating room.
The student will be able to plan, implement, and evaluate the nursing process in the care of the ophthalmology patient, to use knowledge of interdisciplinary subspecialties (anatomy, physiology, nursing) and will be able to explain and defend his/her approach in a scientific as well as a lay discussion. He/she knows clinical examination of the eye, basic examination methods, basic treatment methods, issues related to glaucoma, and issues related to a tumour illness of the eye. He/she knows illnesses of individual parts of the eye, knows issues related to injury, strabismus issues, and knows the principles of care of the visually handicapped.

Oral examination, Written examination

Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test. Successful completion of an oral examination.
