Course content
Fundamental terms, epidemiology, demography, ageing globally, health policy. Concept of Active Ageing, WHO on ageing. Burnout syndrome. Organization of service and care, quality of service, ethical issues in care for o seniors, social and legal issues of maltreatment of seniors, issues of cruelty, neglect and abuse of seniors, maladaptation syndrome. Specifics of pharmacotherapy in old age. Complex geriatric assessment, auxiliary examination for functional status assessment, sufficiency assessment, need for care. Musculoskeletal system in old age, immobility, instability, immobilization syndrome, injuries. Intellectual disorders, neurological and psychiatric issues in old age. Behavior and sleep disorders, pain. Palliative care in geriatrics. Digestive system in old age. Nutrition and its disorders, anorexia, malnutrition, dehydration, disorders of internal environment. Cardiovascular system in old age, respiratory system in old age. Urinary tract and gynecological disorders in old age, incontinence, hematological disorders. Metabolic and endocrine syndromes, infections in old age, skin disorders, otorhinolaryngological disorders, eye disorders in old age. Medical history of elderly patients, patient life history and its application in communication with the patient and with relatives. Reminiscence. Complex geriatric assessment - CGA. Nutrition state assessment. Gait and posture assessment. Assessment of mental functions. Cognitive training. Sufficiency assessment, performance assessment. Concept of active ageing, geriatric health promotion. Sociological analysis of life in the institution, in natural environment, quality of life questionnaires, assessment. Needs assessment of healthy and sick seniors in Geriatrics Centre - organizational aspects, SWOT analysis, quality, ethics, legislation. Designing a specific nursing process for a senior hospitalized in acute care. Presentation of case studies on the basis of EBP.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to deepen knowledge in the field of geriatrics, the most frequent medical symptoms and diagnoses are emphasized, and management issues in the care of old patients are elaborated on as well. An emphasis is placed especially upon quality of care.
The student knows communication with the patient, knows individual institutions caring for gerontological patients, has knowledge of care in the region, and is able to solve individual complications and health problems accompanying care and treatment of gerontological patients.

Oral examination, Written examination

Completion of compulsory 75% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 85% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test. Successful completion of an oral examination.
