Course content
Highly specialized care of the patient suffering from the failure of vital functions. Basic life support, indications, activation of the rescue chain, cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Anesthesia - types, equipment, system, monitoring, complications and their solutions. Specifics of anesthesia in geriatrics, oncology, and in patients with severe internal diseases. Mechanical ventilation, indications, ventilation modes, weaning, complex care of the patient with mechanical ventilation. Securing complex post-resuscitation care, critical care algorithms. Shock states. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis. Multiple organ failure - prevention, diagnosis, treatment. Brain death, organ donation, issues of transplantation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Organization of nursing care in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation department. Admission of a critically ill patient. Procedures of securing a critically ill patient. Monitoring in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation department (hemodynamics, intracranial pressure, intraabdominal pressure), continuous renal replacement therapy . Resuscitation beds, care of the respiratory system (inhalation, lavages, drainage).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with specifics of treatment of critically ill patient in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department, particularly geriatric patients, cancer patients, and patients in acute internal conditions.
Students are acquainted with principles of admission and securing of a critically ill patient. Students understand organization of treatment care in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department. Students have learnt specific processes and procedures of the critically ill patients, and are capable to carry out basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to the latest guidelines.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance assessment

Completion of compulsory 60% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 85% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test or an oral examination according to the course guarantor's decision.
