Course content
Emergency medicine. History and development of the EMS, the concept. Definition of catastrophical medicine, mass accidents. Current situations, trends, and future of the EMS. Organization of prehospital care (PHC). Management of PHC, organizational structure. EMS run groups and crews. EMS operations centre. Legal issues, legal accountability. Basic legal rules, regulations, and norms. Workers' responsibilities in emergency medicine (EM). Education and research activities. Chain of survival, or death - definition. Emergency resuscitation, definition, terminology, fundamental concepts. Urgent conditions in cardiology in PHC. Acute coronary syndrome - definition, causes, differential diagnostics, treatment. Chest pain: Differential diagnostics. Arrhythmias within the scope of PHC. Dyspnoea: Differential diagnostics. Respiratory insufficiency. Bronchial asthma in PHC. Shock. Fundamentals of traumatology - the most frequent conditions in PHC. Polytrauma in PHC. Craniocerebral injury, injury to the vertebral column and the spinal cord in PHC. Thoracic injury in PHC. Abdominal injury and injury to the pelvis in PHC. Limb injury. Burns, thermal injuries, and electrotrauma in PHC. Fundamentals of endocrinology. Diabetes mellitus in PHC. Internal environment - acute disorders in PHC. Disorders of water metabolism, electrolyte imbalance. Acute renal failure in PHC. Volume therapy, dehydration, substitute solutions, transfusions. Allergic reactions, anaphylaxis in PHC. Intoxication in PHC. Foreign bodies in an organism. Paediatrics in PHC. Special issues in anaesthesia in PHC. Psychiatry in PHC. Neurology in PHC. Abdominal emergencies in PHC. Gynaecology and obstetrics from the PHC point of view. Infectious illnesses from the PHC point of view. Ophthalmology - eye injuries and their treatment. Other acute conditions in PHC - drowning, injury and illnesses caused by animals, etc. Equipment and aids used in PHC. Technical tools used in PHC (ambulances, helicopter, radiocommunication, etc.). Medications in PHC. PHC documentation and procedures. Monitoring and basic laboratory in PHC. Emergency hospital admissions. Review, preparation for final examinations, and for the thesis.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to become familiar with issues associated with treatment of sudden acute conditions during transportation of afflicted people by land or air emergency medical services (EMS) and during transfer of the patient to hospital emergency care.
The student knows issues associated with planning, organizing and managing rescue work during mass accidents, disasters, and in non-military as well as military crisis situations.
