Course content
The origin of philosophy, its character and division, basic characteristics, and branches. Basic types of philosophical issues relevant to the field. Ethics as practical philosophy, the subject of ethics and its classification; special features of the ethical dimension in health and social work. Agathological viewpoint - the concept of good and theoretical interpretation of the dimension of what is and what should be. Social viewpoint - ethos, manners, morality, and professional ethics in the social context of health and social work. Theological viewpoint: utilitarianism and nihilism; egoism and altruism; optimism, pessimism, and meliorism. Moral choice, dilemma, conflict; motive, aim, means and consequences of moral action. Basic ethical categories. Modern anthropologism, scientism, and systemic approach to ethics. Basic directions of social ethics: Christian, liberal, and socialist ethics. The profession and codes of ethics; social specifics, specifics of health and social work, and professional ethos. Plan of activities for the practicum sessions, set tasks and their assessment, and area of study literature. Contemporary discussed ethical issues with respect to health and social work. Ethical issues in selected areas: health and social care for the handicapped. Ethical issues in selected areas: community care, gerontology, palliative and terminal care, and paediatrics and neonatology. Dehumanized medicine and holistic patient care. The principle of justice, solidarity and the right to health. Respect for life, human dignity and other central ethical categories in the area of health and social work. Professionalization in the society, professional codes; professional ethos, and competencies of the health and social worker. Responsibility and purpose in life.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to philosophical thinking so that they gain a deeper understanding of the man - man relationship in the context of social work and at the same time, so that they acquire critical thinking based on the selected topics. Particular attention is paid to professional ethics, codes of ethics, specifics in health and social work, professional ethos, and competencies of the health and social worker.
The student has general knowledge of basic stages of philosophical thinking and is able to characterize basic philosophical issues.

Completion of compulsory attendance at the lectures and practicum sessions. Final written work. Oral examination.
