Course content
Introduction to hygiene and epidemiology - health status of the population, protection and promotion of public health. Addictive behaviour - smoking, alcohol and drug consumption. Hygiene of children and adolescents - child development, prevention of health damage. Nutritional hygiene - the importance of proteins, fats, and sugars in the diet, strategies for improving diet. Indirect nutritional risks - physical, chemical, and biological contamination. Occupational hygiene - categorization of jobs, high-risk jobs. Non-infectious diseases of mass occurrence. Cardiovascular diseases - primary and secondary prevention. Cancer - primary and secondary prevention. Infectious diseases - general, occurrence, and prevention. Hygienic aspects of the environment - external environment, interior spaces of buildings. Health promotion projects. Prevention of addictive behaviour, withdrawal programs. Nutrition in childhood. Drinking water, water intake. Physical activity. Work-related health damage, prevention. Work-related stress. Prevention of lifestyle diseases. Infectious diseases related to healthcare, prevention. Recommendations for improving the environment.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to inform the students about the basics of hygiene of environment and work conditions, about the hygiene of nutrition, the problem of toxicology, epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases or about the problems of lifestyle risk factors.
The student is able to orientate himself/ herself in the field of the prevention and support of health at work places with the special accent to hygiene in hospitals. The student is also able to orientate himself/ herself in the prevention of civilization diseases.
