Course content
The concept of spirituality: the proliferation of the term and its semantics, the definition of spirituality and the division of spiritualities, spirituality and the call to service. Anthropological grounds for religious experience and spirituality in historical overview, the body-soul-spirit trichotomy. Spiritual development of a personality, discerning thoughts and working with emotions in a transcendent perspective, forms of religious practice as care for one's own mental hygiene in the helping professions, spiritual counselling for the helping professions. Spirituality of service and charitable work in the light of the cardinal and theological virtues; history and schools of Christian spirituality with a focus on service. Spirituality of non-Christian world religions with a focus on the helping professions; issues of sects and religious violence. Spirituality and contemporary human issues. Spirituality and nursing practice (crisis moments).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to present students with a broader and narrower definitions of the phenomenon of spirituality as it has been understood within the Christian traditions, also taking into account the search for new spiritual paths of a contemporary man. The lectures introduce the anthropological basis for spirituality in the helping professions and for the spirituality of ecclesiastic care of the sick who require spiritual support (for example, in the services of hospital chaplains). Important topics will include ways of self-knowledge, distinguishing of thoughts, working with emotions, spiritual practice, and spiritual development of the personality in transpersonal and transcendent perspectives. Cardinal and theological virtues as principles for professional spirituality and nursing ethics will not be neglected. Students learn about the spirituality of world religions and the negative phenomena associated with religions..
The student is ready to apply the acquired knowledge in his profession within the framework of salutoprotective factors of spirituality, the importance of spirituality in difficult situations and especially vulnerable groups. They will acquire the preventive function of religiosity and spirituality in the field of psychopathological phenomena and in a healthy lifestyle.

Fulfillment of the mandatory participation in seminars with the elaboration of one's own paper. Successful completion of the oral exam.
