Course content
Dilemmas in social work. Paradigms of social work. Psychodynamic theories. Humanistic and existentialist theories. Sociological theories. Socio-psychological and communication models. Cognitively behavioural trends, a task-oriented approach. Socially ecological perspectives. Anti-oppressive approach. System theory. Reality therapy. Power and assistance in social work. Social work with individuals. Relationship between the client and social worker, focused target approach by Řezníček. Systemic modification of the approach by Úlehla and professional work styles. Social work with groups, group social work and group therapy. Types and purposes of groups, models and stages of group work. Forming a group, group dynamics, group development stages, and styles of group management. Discussion of current dilemmas in Czech social work. Discussion of current dilemmas in international social work. Examples of the use of psychodynamic and socio-psychological theories. Examples of the use of sociological and system theories. Examples of the use of cognitively behavioural trends in practice. Example of the use of reality therapy. Examples of the use of the anti-oppressive approach. Examples of the use of the system theory.

Learning outcomes
The subject aims for social work students to acquire a basic overview of the development of social work and its legitimacy, to accept the values of social work, become familiar with the terminology of social work, become well versed in the main currents of thought affecting the development of social work, and to know the theoretical models relevant for social work.
Students are well versed in individual methods of social work and their use in practice.

Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the lectures and practicum sessions. Successful completion an oral examination.
