Key learning outcomes The aim of the doctoral study programme is to provide the background for independent creative work and for complex scientific-research. The students will also be led into extensive publication activities. Based on the choice of optional subjects and, in particular, the dissertation topic, the students will generally be profiled into one of three basic branches. o Radio engineering, microwave technology, radar and communication systems The studies will be focused on application-oriented research in the fields of modelling and computer simulation of electromagnetic fields, adaptive methods of digital signal processing, object recognition, and radio networks with adaptively adjustable parameters. Students will solve research problems related to radio communication and radar systems and their components, simulation and modelling, and advanced methods of analog and digital signal processing. o Network systems modelling and simulation In this branch, attention will be focused mainly on exploring and optimizing network systems and infrastructures including computer networks, transport networks, communication, and service networks. In a broader context, operational research techniques will be dealt with in this specialization. The research activities of the PhD students will be based on solving the problems of simulation models and methodologies for experiment planning according to different scenarios. This will be performed using methodologies of modelling infrastructures and operation of network systems in different application domains, and through optimization of operational characteristics of network systems using various modelling techniques. o Process control and automation In this branch, students will deal with state of the art automatic control theory, modelling and identification of dynamic systems, and robotics. The focus of the research will be especially based on advanced control algorithms using adaptive and on-line optimization, as well as computer vision and machine learning. This focus is consistent with current industry trends such as Industry 4.x, iSmart Factories, IoT, Smart Grids and others.
