Course content
The entire range of restoration and conservation treatments: starting from monument exploration, analyses assessment, restoration project, work procedure documentation up to problems related to storage and protection of treated work. Practical presentation of exploration of parchment bookbinding, parchment documents, and seals. Fundamentals of non-destructive exploration (chemical, physical, optical analysis) and destructive (skimming, sampling for further analysis). Practical training focused on exploration of support and colour layer; text analysis, identification of inks and other materials; specification of damage extend considering writing agent or colour layer; disinfection, cleaning, adhesive, impregnation, filling, recovery, seal protection. Illumination: colour layer exploration, gilding, silver-plating; specification of extend and number of deteriorated spots of colour layer, gold, silver and support; disinfection procedures; fixing processes applied to loosened colour layer parts; cleaning - mechanical, wet process and using organic solvents; removing secondary treatments - over pasting, retouching; filling of missing parts of support; retouching; gilding being a part of a colour layer, filling of loosened gilding parts; illumination conservation methods. The parchment binding: deterioration extend, microbiological skimming; disinfection; disassembling of bookbinding or cover, parchment block; sewing, block fixing; fixing of text, seals, colour; cleaning - dry, wet, chemical; removing secondary over pasting; material reinforcement; parchment straightening; filling of missing parts; parchment block sewing; finishing of a book cover, parchment cover; block final assembling using a wrapper.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to teach the students knowledge and skills needed for the restoration of parchment. Student can make an informed work with pergamenem, handles the procedures for restoration and preservation.

Test in the form of evaluation of the student realised in the Studio. Participation in studio exercise is required.
