The subject is aimed to enable the students to deepen and expand the knowledge and skills they acquired in all components of communicative language competence during their preceding studies, when they achieved the B1+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It reflects the principles of ESP course design. The module Introduction to Academic Writing - Formality is aimed at improving the students´ identification skills in the area of formal academic language and the application of elements typical for EAP to their own written production.
The student continues to develop the language competence acquired during his/her previous studies with an emphasis on argumentation, effective social discourse and language awareness. He/she can use co-operating strategies in conversation and mark clearly the relationships between ideas when creating complex text. He/she can use these competences effectively in the field of general English as well as ESP. The target level of the course is B1+. Module Introduction to Academic Writing - Formality: The students are able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills to their own written production. They can write a paper on an up-to-date topic relevant to their field of study using formal English typical for EAP. |

Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment
1) A written paper (1-2 pages, i.e. 400-600 words) in academic English dealing with an up-to-date topic relevant to the field of study with an attached glossary of 5-10 technical terms or expressions. 2) Oral presentation (10 minutes) of the topic of the above paper. |
