Course content
|
Unit 1. Introduction to academic writing. This unit discusses the aims, content and structure of an academic essay. Unit 2. Conventions and presentation. Formatting and presenting your work. Unit 3. Research skills. How to find, assess and choose sources for an essay. Unit 4. Working with sources. How to engage with authoritative voices in support of our argument. Unit 5. Planning and outlining. This unit discusses the importance of planning an essay. Unit 6. Vocabulary. Using persuasive language. Unit 7. A paragraph. This unit analyses the structure of a single paragraph and discusses how to present your ideas. Unit 8. The consecutive paragraph. Working with critical voices. Unit 9. Introduction and conclusions. How to write a compelling introduction and a convincing conclusion. Unit 10. Editing and proofreading.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to adopt the theoretical principles of stylistics and develop students' ability to work with authoritative sources. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge through written work, with the focus on academic writing. AI use note: In this course, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is regulated at Level 2, with additional restrictions. The use of generative AI tools for the production of assessed coursework and graded outputs is not permitted, with the exception of language-correction tools such as Grammarly or the autocorrection functions of text editors. The course is designed to develop students' independent analytical and creative competencies without significant technological assistance. In contrast to the standard Level 2 framework, the use of AI is also prohibited for bibliographic research, the identification and retrieval of scholarly sources, and translation activities. The only exceptions are assignments and activities for which the instructor explicitly specifies a different AI-use level. In such cases, the conditions governing the use of AI, including any higher level of permitted use, will be stated directly in the instructions for the relevant assignment. In all other circumstances, the rules outlined above remain in effect.
