Course content
Language and communication. Present-day Czech language. Standard and non-standard varieties. Czech phonetics and phonology. Standards of pronunciation. Grammar: Morphology and syntax. Inflectional categories. Ortography and spelling: selected problems. Proper nouns. Czech lexicon: social, regional and stylistic varities. Word formative processes, loanwords and their adaptations.

Learning outcomes
The course intends to activate and supplement knowledge and skills related to the Czech language and to improve the quality of both spoken and written forms of communication. The students learn to understand the notions of grammaticality and acceptability in the framework of the functional linguistic approaches.
Students will be able to use the grammars of the Czech language to explain and illustrate linguistic problems, and to understand the issues of both descriptive and prescriptive Czech grammar. Discussing the authentic linguistic material, the students learn to understand and interpret the choice of linguistic and stylistic means to achiveve a particular communicative function in the field of professional communication. Apart from presenting an outline of the development of both the past and present Czech language situation, the course provides an insight into various linguistic layers, styles, and areas of communication.
