Course content
SYNTAX: terminology, relations within the phrase and sentence SENTENCE ELEMENTS, SENTENCE PATTERNS, SENTENCE vs. CLAUSE, SUBJECT: form, semantic functions, grammatical, notional and general subject PREDICATE: form; auxiliary and lexical verbs; terminology varieties; finite x non-finite verb forms; syntactic types of the verb: transitive, intransitive, linking OBJECT: transitive verbs and their complementation; direct and indirect object, complement to the object. ADVERBIALS: form, position within the sentence; adjuncts semantic functions ADVERBIALS as sentence modifiers: conjuncts and disjuncts; comment clauses NEGATION IN ENGLISH AND CZECH: scope and focus of negation CONCORD / AGREEMENT: grammatical and notional, proximity rules CONCORD AND COORDINATION: apposition, appositive clauses COMPLEX NOUN PHRASE: head, pre- and post-modification; discontinuous noun phrases; Czech equivalents COMMUNICATIVE TYPES OF SIMPLE SENTENCE: statements, questions, commands, exclamations ENGLISH FRAGMENTARY SENTENCES: English Equivalents of Czech Subject-less Sentences: Czech verbal and verbo-nominal sentences; a variety of subjects in English

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with detailed theoretical knowledge of English sentence structure, particularly the structure of simple sentences, individual sentence elements, and sentence types from the perspective of intentional modality.
Students will acquire the theoretical knowledge, will be able to analyze sentences, identify individual sentence elements, and describe sentence patterns. They will acquire the skills necessary to define individual sentence elements and to create illustrative examples of individual structures. They will also acquire the competence to compare sentence structures in Czech and English.

active participation in seminars (maximum 2 classes can be missed) assignments according to instructions specified in lessons (via the Moodle system) written test (90 minutes): the application of their knowledge in the syntactic analysis and the production of assigned sentence structures; 60% minimum
