Course content
Introduction to terminology. Corpora characteristics: type, size, technical features, tagging. Concordancers. Samples of data-driven learning activities, exercises. Work with free on-line concordancers, principles of searching, looking for lexical units and grammatical structures. Hands-on session: work with concordancer WordSmith Tools. British National Corpus and other English language corpora. Tagged text, various formats of tagging, lemmatization, work with tagged text. Application of corpus linguistics for second language acquisition process, text analysis, interpretation of findings. Hands-on session: work with corpora and concordancers, text analysis, frequency of lexical units. Comparison of corpus linguistics findings and dictionary description, applications for study of vocabulary and grammar.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to teach students to work with special concordancing software, in order to work with language corpora for English language learning and teaching.
Students will get knowledge about corpus linguistics and be able to use concordancers especially for vocabulary development, the study of lexical units in context, to use authentic texts for the purpose of looking for of idioms and collocations, of grammatical and lexical analysis of a text, of preparing the materials for English language teaching.

Active participation (maximum 2 classes can be missed) assignments according to instructions specified in lessons submitting the project on using corpora and concordancers for ELT (in electronic version) + presentation of the project in the class
