Course content
Structure of diploma thesis and formal criteria Content of diploma thesis: aim and purpose, topic - narrowing the topic, coherence Style of academic writing: grammar, diction, tone Exploring, researching, evaluating and using sources Bibliography, citation norms, direct quotations, paraphrases, summaries, plagiarism Making an outline (selecting subject headings) and writing the first draft Writing Introduction and Conclusion Revising the paper: a) checking for content, organization, clarity and referencing b) checking for grammar and style; spelling, punctuation and capitalization

Learning outcomes
The aim of the Diploma Seminar in the 5th year of study is to provide students with support in the process of writing their diploma papers in the fields of ELT Methodology, Literature, Cultural Studies or Linguistics. The accent is put on presenting, sharing and discussing experiences concerning various theoretical, empirical, formal, and methodological aspects of producing the diploma paper.
Students develop their competence both in the area of academic writing and research in the relevant field (linguistics, literature and cultural studies, ELT methodology).

Linguistics: 1. 60% active participation in seminars/discussions 2. min. two consultations with the supervisor of diploma thesis 3. submission of thesis structure, list of literature and 5-page draft ELT Methodology: 1. 50% active participation in discussions 2. presentation of progress report 3. submission of thesis structure, list of literature, 10 pages draft Literature: 1. regular reports on the work progress 2. at least two meetings with the supervisor of the thesis 3. fullfilment of individual tasks given during the seminar
