Course content
|
Basic morphological units and terms, morphological characteristic of English and Czech. Word classes, the concept of phrases. Lexical morphology and word-formation processes. Nouns, their basic properties and grammatical categories. Pronouns, their properties, function and classification. Types, properties and gradation of adjectives and their correspondence to other word classes. Semantic and functional classification of adverbs and their formation. Prepositions and conjunctions, their types, form and function. Classification of verbs, verb phrase and its semantics, grammatical categories. Indirect speech in Czech and in English. Classification of auxiliary verbs. Negation in Czech and in English. Non-finite verb forms, their properties, function and correspondence to Czech forms. Modality in Czech and in English. Phrasal, prepositional and phrasal-prepositional verbs.

Learning outcomes
|
The main objective of the course is to master the basic concepts of English morphology in comparison with Czech. Students gain theoretical knowledge of English word classes which they learn to use effectively for text analysis as well as for their own production.
The students should be able to distinguish and describe basic morphological categories in the English language and relate them to their Czech lexicogrammatical counterparts. They should be able to use their knowledge in communicative practice.
