Course content
Objects of lexicology and its connection with other areas of linguistics. Lexical and grammatical system and synchronic and diachronic approach. Lexical meaning and semantic structure. Syntagmatic relations. Collocation. Morphological structure of English words. Word formation processes. Set expressions,their classification, basic properties and functions. Semantic change. Figurative language. Paradigmatic relations in vocabulary system. Stylistic stratification of vocabulary. Time stratification of vocabulary. Etymology, types of loans and the process of domestication.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Methods of individual activities, Skills training
Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to make students familiar with basic lexicological concepts and the structure of English lexicon together with its variability.
Students will be able to perform a complete lexicological analysis of a text in terms of form, meaning, various word-formation processes and sense relations between individual lexical items. Also, students will be competent at evaluating a text from the social, stylistic and territorial point of view. Students will be able to interpret individual formal and informal features on the basis of context.
