Course content
Inquiry based learning: Scholarly and academic research in ELT. Search for data, primary and secondary information sources. Processing secondary data. Phases of research, quality of research. Research methods and tools: primary data collection, their processing and discussion. Research ethics. Plagiarism and data protection. Academic discourse and text processing (layout, referencing and citing, editing). Preparation, creation and presentation of the research conducted.

Learning outcomes
The subject represents the introduction to empirical research of English language teaching/learning processes. In the course, students will acquire basic knowledge and terminology which will help them to understand and evaluate scholarly and academic research done in their fields of study. Students will apply their knowledge and skills in their own research (analysis and evaluation of the used research methods and tools, their advantages and disadvantages, collection, processing and discussion of research data, presentation of the research report).
The student will acquire key skills in the research of learning/teaching a foreign language, i.e. how to make a research design (planning, preparation, application of research methods and tools, processing results).

Oral examination, Student performance assessment, Work-related product analysis, Self project defence, Presentation

Requirements (process and product oriented): 1. Ongoing: feedback and evaluation on Research Projects, following ethical principles, applying terminology, assigning duties and responsibilities of students. 2. Research Project Tasks: Task 1: identifying research problem, questions Task 2: sampling Task 3: selecting relevant sources (literature review exploring empirical findings in the field of investigation, at least 5 relevant research papers) Task 4-5: designing sets of data collection tools Task 6: data collection Task 7: data coding and analysis, their organization and presentation Task 8: abstract writing Fail x pass criterion of evaluation in the individual phases, if three tasks not having been handed in time = fail. Tasks can be performed either in the f-2-f sessions or in the electronic form. Electronic support: LMS Moodle @ unicom.upce.cz; course PINFU (summer term 2016/17); password: pinfu, also serves for theoretical input and communicating. 3. Final Task: research project presentation and discussion in the colloquium. The student should be able to understand and apply research methodology knowledge not only during presenting, but also when asking questions, providing feedback, and evaluating their coursemates' Research Projects.
