Course content |
Elements of effective writing (format, style, structure). Stages of the writing process (prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, proofreading and editing stage). Structuring an essay: analysis. Structuring an essay: writing introduction. Structuring an essay: writing paragraphs (presentation, analysis, discussion). Structuring an essay: writing paragraphs (unity and coherence). Structuring an essay: writing conclusions. Aspects of style: cohesion, coherence. Aspects of style: essentials of clarity. Aspects of style: emphasising. Aspects of style: punctuation. Aspects of style: connecting devices.

This course provides students with basic skills in writing, gives them theoretical background in stylistics, and instructs them about its usage within writing, especially academic. Students engage theoretical texts as well as practical examples; however, the core of the course lies in analysis of their own pieces of writing. The topics explored include the choice of appropriate linguistics means, the stylistic layers of language, text organization and various types of composition.
Students will acquire an insight into the issues of writing in a foreign language, and learn and practice basic techniques of form and organization in writing. |
