Course content
Introduction. Functions of language. Linguistics as a science. System and structure. La langue, la parole. Linguistic sign. Communication. Levels of analysis. Phonetics and phonology. Morphology. Syntax. Semantics. Pragmatics. Discourse analysis. Stylistics. Language typologies, a brief history of English. Social and geographical variation of language. History of linguistics, linguistic disciplines.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with an introductory framework necessary for the study of further linguistic courses. It should present an overview of the levels of linguistic analysis and introduce the basic notions in the linguistic disciplines dealing with the individual levels.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to distinguish the structural levels of language and perform a rudimentary linguistic analysis. They should also be able to distinguish the between the rules language as a system and its actual use in context. In addition, the knowledge acquired in the course should help students to improve their communicative skills.
