Course content
SYNTAX: terminology, relations within the phrase and sentence SENTENCE ELEMENTS, SENTENCE PATTERNS, SENTENCE vs. CLAUSE, SUBJECT: form, semantic functions, grammatical, notional and general subject PREDICATE: form; auxiliary and lexical verbs; terminology varieties; finite x non-finite verb forms; syntactic types of the verb: transitive, intransitive, linking OBJECT: transitive verbs and their complementation; direct and indirect object, complement to the object. ADVERBIALS: form, position within the sentence; adjuncts semantic functions ADVERBIALS as sentence modifiers: conjuncts and disjuncts; comment clauses NEGATION IN ENGLISH AND CZECH: scope and focus of negation CONCORD / AGREEMENT: grammatical and notional, proximity rules CONCORD AND COORDINATION: apposition, appositive clauses COMPLEX NOUN PHRASE: head, pre- and post-modification; discontinuous noun phrases; Czech equivalents COMMUNICATIVE TYPES OF SIMPLE SENTENCE: statements, questions, commands, exclamations ENGLISH FRAGMENTARY SENTENCES: English Equivalents of Czech Subject-less Sentences: Czech verbal and verbo-nominal sentences; a variety of subjects in English

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with detailed theoretical knowledge concerning the sentence structure in English, especially the structure of a simple sentence, clause elements and intentional modality of sentences.
Students will get the theoretical knowledge; will be able to analyze a sentence, to identify individual clauses elements, to describe sentence patterns. They will skills for clause elements analysis and clause elements production. They will also acquire a competence for comparative study of the English and Czech sentence structure and for teaching grammar of EFL.

Active participation (maximum 2 classes can be missed) assignments according to instructions specified in lessons written test (90 minutes): application of their knowledge in the syntactic analysis and creating specified syntactic structures
