Course content
|
Relation of language and society. Models of interaction in society. Language and communities, varieties, regional and social dialects. Characteristics and functions of lingua franca, creole a pidgin. Language as a code: diglossia, bilingualism and multilingualism. Use of language and creating identity of an individual. Language and gender. Language and power. Language policy: dialect, language and nation. Language planning and education.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge focused on the theories of the relation between society and language and to enable them to apply this knowledge for the methodology of foreign language teaching, alternatively for their research connected with diploma thesis.
Students will be able to consider the use of language in connection to particular functions in a society and will acquire skills of applying the knowledge in the process of English language teaching.
