The course will deepen students´knowledge on the writing of ethnic minorities within American literature. It will address the position of minority writing within a traditionally understood canon as well as the issues of the so-called opening-up of a canon and will discuss some theoretical issues connected with ethnicity, "majority" and "minority" and with the relationship of literature and culture. Attention will also be paid to the historical changes of the reception and acceptance of minority writing. The course will analyze particular works (for example of Afro-American, Asian-American, Native American, Jewish American, etc. authors) from the point of view of how the authors cope with the issue of identity, double-consciousness, relationship to the cultural majority, specifics of a given ethnic literature.
Students will develop their ability of literary and cultural analysis, intercultural competence and communicative skills.
