Bacterial metabolism: Enzymes and energy in metabolism, catabolism of glucose, catabolism of other carbohydrates, anaerobic respiration, fermentation (alcoholic fermentation, lactic acid and propionic acid fermentation, butyric acid - butanol fermentation etc.) Bacterial genetics: Mutation, recombination ( transformation, conjugation, transduction). Most important strains of bacteria. Viruses, bacteriophages. Algae and cyanobacteria. Characteristics of fungi ( yeasts and moulds) - structure, growth and reproduction. Classification of fungi. Review of most important of strains. Microorganisms and the environment. The cycles of elements in water and soil. Microbiology of water. Indicators microorganisms and pathogens in water. Micromycetes in water. Standard methods for examination of water and wastewater. Waster purification, sewage treatment. Microbiological control of air.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Laboratory work
Learning outcomes
Aim of this subject is to acquaint students with structure and function of prokaryotic and simple eukaryotic cells, their metabolism, genetics and reproduction. Students will learn nutrition of microorganisms, physical and chemical factors affecting their metabolism. Students will know major bacterial groups according to Bergey's system, filamentous fungi, yeasts, cyanobacteria and viruses, which are important from the aspect of nutrient and environmental microbiology. Essential role of microorganisms at element circulation is also outlined to students. At laboratory students adopted various techniques of inoculation and cultivation of various species and will be able to evaluate their characteristics. Students will be acquainted with principles and rules of work in microbiology lab, preparation of various types of microscopic specimen and nutrient media for cultivation of microorganisms.
Absolvent has overview of dividing of prokaryotes and eukaryotes microorganisms important from the point of the view of microbiology, and of types of their metabolism.
