Course content
Toxicology topics: An introduction presenting and explaining issues related to working not only with toxic substances in the context of conservation. Students will become familiar with protection options and practical information relevant to this area. Microbiology in conservation: Introduction to bacteria and moulds, their life cycles, their impact on heritage objects, and the working conditions of conservators. Methods for identifying infestations in objects and identifying the organisms involved. Wood: Wooden heritage objects and structural elements that form part of historic buildings. Chemical composition, degradation mechanisms of wood, and options for its protection and conservation. Metals: A focus on procedures for the conservation of metal componentsparticularly iron, copper, brass, and silverwith emphasis on cleaning and subsequent protective measures against potential corrosion. Ceramics: More specifically focused on ceramic materials used in construction: bricks, tiles, and flooring. Introduction to the material, including its chemical composition and degradation mechanisms. Additional topics may be added to the course, or the topics mentioned above may be replaced depending on current requirements of students and instructors, or the evolving professional demands placed on conservators.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to broaden students' knowledge in complementary topics and to expand their understanding of materials they may encounter within the field. It also seeks to supplement their knowledge of chemistry relevant to restoration practice.
The student will further develop their existing knowledge and cover additional, though more peripheral, yet essential topics.
