Course content
Rail Vehicles 1. Main topics from the railway transport needed for further interpretation. 2. Overview of rail vehicles - classication and use of vehicles, concept and technical parameters of vehicles. 3. The main parts of vehicles - running parts of vehicles - the concept of wheelsets, bearings, suspension. 4. Driving of rail vehicles - traction characteristics, power transmission to wheelsets, wheelset drives. 5. Basic physical principles applied to the movement of vehicles and basic principles specific to rail vehicle. Forces acting on the vehicle. Vehicle on a slope, vehicle in cant, driving in a curve and on a straight track. 6. Rail vehicle brakes. 7. Basics of rolling stock operation. Road vehicles. 7. Introduction, definition, basic nomenclature and division of vehicles, concept of vehicles, basic dimensions and weights, division of vehicle construction into individual units. 8. Vehicle support structure - frame/bodywork, axles, suspension. 9. Vehicle support structure - wheels and tires, steering, vehicle braking systems - basic division, construction of selected parts. 10. Vehicle drive system - internal combustion engine - functions, basic parameters and constructions, alternative drives and vehicle drive concepts. 11. Drive system - transmission system - basic gearbox, additional gearbox, transfer case, differential and articulated shafts. 12. Fundamentals of road vehicle motion mechanics. 13. Joint lecture - future concept of means of transport, time reserve.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Demonstration, Projection, Stimulating activities (simulation, games, drama)
Learning outcomes
The aim of learning it is to make students acquainted with bases of theory, construction and operation of transport technologies.
After passing the subject, students are familiar with principles of theory, construction and operation of transport technologies. They are acquainted with technical legislation, with basic parts of vehicles and traffic road, oriented in problems of supervision over technical state of vehicles, safety and ecology of transport operation.
Prerequisites
Students are supposed to have basic technical knowledge, obtained by study at high school.

During the semester and at the examination students must demonstrate understanding of solved problems and prove ability to orientate themselves in problems of the subject. Actual requirements will be announced at the first week of the semester.
