The course deals with problems of power semiconductor converters, used power semiconductor devices, their serial and parallel linkage, voltage and current dimensioning, electromagnetic compatibility problems, backward effects of power semiconductor converters on supply mains, reactive power compensation and higher harmonics filtration. Classification of semiconductor converters and explanation of basic function principles on example of one-phase one-pulse rectifier with various types of load is performed. That is followed by analysis of rectifiers in point to point connection and in bridge connection, DC converters and AC converters with various types of load, voltage source inverters, current source inverters, resonance inverters, direct and indirect frequency converters, cycloconverters, matrix converters, for each converter with emphasis on circuit diagram, function principles, control and load characteristics, as well as application examples.
Passing this study subject the student obtains knowledge in the field of power electronics that is necessary for the following-up subjects "Electric Drives" and "Electric Traction I, II".
Prerequisites
Knowledge of mathematical analysis and circuit's theory is necessary. Knowledge of the passed study subjects "Electrical Engineering", "Electronical Elements and Circuits I, II", and "Theoretical Electrical Engineering" is assumed.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination
During the semester as well as at the final exam students must prove understanding solved problems. Specific requirements shall be stated to students by the teacher in the first week of the semester.
